Fans of Audra McDonald are in for a treat.

The Tony Award-winning actress is planning a return to the small screen.

McDonald, who previously starred in ABC’s drama Private Practice, has just been cast in the CBS drama pilot The Ordained. The show focuses on a man from a Kennedy-esque family who leaves the priesthood in order to work in one of New York’s top law firms. McDonald will play Althea, a senior litigator in the firm.

If this drama is picked up with by the network, it will be the first time McDonald fully returns to television since playing Dr. Naomi Bennett on Private Practice. McDonald left the show in 2011, shortly before the series finale earlier this year.

No date has been set for the premiere episode of The Ordained but actors Charlie Cox and Nestor Serrano have also signed on for the series.

Fans had a chance to see McDonald as Bess in the recent Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess in 2012. A role earning her wins for all four Tony nominations she received.

Never having the chance to see her perform live, it is easy to say that McDonald’s Naomi was a fan favorite doctor in Private Practice, the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off. Knowing that McDonald had a theatre history, it was easy to find watching her even on a television show. Whenever she entered a scene it was clear that she claimed attention and had an aurora about her.

For those who don’t want to wait for The Ordained, you can watch McDonald make a guest appearance on the hit CBS drama The Good Wife where McDonald will play a former classmate to lead Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies.

The episode airs March 10.
