First-Time Tony Nominee: Charl Brown captures the spirit of ‘Motown’ as Smokey Robinson

Among a slew of sure-to-be Broadway stars in Motown: The Musical , Charl Brown is a standout performer in the cast for hisbrilliant performance as Smokey Robinson, the legendary R&B singer-songwriter. And critics and fans agree that Brown is deserving of his new title as a nominee in the category of Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

With music and lyrics from the classic catalogue of Motown hits, the musical tells the uplifting story of music mogul Berry Gordy who guided some of the most talented artists of all time to super stardom. Accompanied by the tunes that make up this show’s stupendous score, Motown also depicts famous pop culture icons such as Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross.

Brown has previously appeared in the original cast of Sister Act in the ensemble and understudy track for TJ and Eddie Souther. He also performed in the Broadway production of Jersey Boys as Barry Belson and toured with the European company of Hair as Hud. On top of all that, he has been involved with Motown: The Musical since the original Broadway lab.

Brown called the news of his nomination a “dream come true.” With his awe-inspiring and realistic portrayal in this show, fans of Motown music will feel like they’re in a dream as well as they see Brown bring Smokey Robinson to life on the stage.
