Audiences this spring are choosing among a pair of sweet, demure, fairytale glass slippers and a pair of thigh-high, patent leather, fire-engine red spike-heeled boots.

Forget diamonds, Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Firestein’s Kinky Boots are two of the most anticipated shows that feature girl’s best friend – her shoes!

Everyone knows the classic story of Cinderella, a rags to riches tale with plenty of magic, but this 2013 revival has brought a brand-new life to this fairytale princess… and her wardrobe. These iconic shoes are sleeker, shinier, and even sexier than the slippers we’ve seen Cinderella wearing. But a revamped story requires a new twist on an old look.

On the opposite side of the spectrum  Kinky Boots, currently in previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, is a darling, upbeat, and delightfully fun musical based on rescuing a real-life failing shoe factory. Assortments of shoes make an appearance as an unlikely duo, played by Stark Sands and Billy Porter, work together to keep the company afloat.

Which shoe-inspired show is your favorite? Would you want to take a walk on the town in Cinderella’s heels or in a pair of kinky boots? Let me know in comments!
