The cast of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will begin laying down tracks for an original Broadway cast recording this Monday. The album of the beloved a classic fairy tale with a modern twist will be released by Ghostlight Records this spring. The production opened at the Broadway Theatre on March 3 with success.

Cinderella stars Broadway sweetheart Laura Osnes, who  performs the iconic “In My Own Little Corner” and “Ten Minutes Ago” with her prince played by Broadway veteran Santino Fontana. Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Harriet Harris, Peter Bartlett, and Greg Hildreth also take the stage and now the studio in the production.

The Cinderella score, with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, was written in 1957 for television. The Broadway production includes revered favorites like “Impossible/It’s Possible” as well as four other Rodgers & Hammerstein pieces that have been added to the show. Douglas Carter Beane provides a brand new book, Mark Brokaw directs and Josh Rhodes choreographs.

Any effort to preserve Broadway history on an album is fantastic but what’s especially great about this cast recording is that many of this production’s fans remember growing up watching the 1997 film of the same name that featured the same timeless music. While there will be marked differences in this new recording, including additional songs that were not originally included in the score, the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella are widely known and cherished. They’ve been treasured ever since they were first released over fifty years ago, and today theatergoers are clamoring to have a copy of fresh new voices bringing the music to life again.

The songs of Cinderella are part of a collective heritage and hold a host of childhood memories for countless Americans. How many wannabe Broadway ingénues remember singing “In My Own Little Corner” in grade school talent shows while their mothers wept proudly in the audience? Oh, that didn’t happen to everybody else?

Ghostlight Records has been behind cast recordings of productions including [title of show], The Book of Mormon, and Leap of Faith, and will surely bring more Broadway magic with Cinderella.
