Jeremy Jordan named as Jamie in ‘The Last Five Years’ film

Jeremy Jordan’s career is skyrocketing and we couldn’t be more excited.

It seems like days ago Jeremy was cast as a new lead in the NBC series Smash and today news broke that Jeremy will play Jamie opposite Anna Kendrick’s Cathy in the film adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years.

Jeremy is no stranger to playing a brooding character like Jamie and his strong voice make him a perfect match for the role.

When I spoke with Jeremy a couple weeks ago, I asked him if he had anything else on his horizon other than his season two debut on Smash as Jimmy Collins, a tortured musician. Although he denied anything else was in the works, it seemed unlikely that Jeremy would have free time after Smash ends its season two filming.

And now, with the news confirming that Jeremy will be playing the brooding writer in The Last Five Years, I couldn’t be more excited.

Not only does Jeremy have a long list of leading man roles on his resume – including Jack Kelly in Newsies, Clyde Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde and Jimmy Collins on Smash – but after seeing him in the less-than-stellar Joyful Noise it’s time Jeremy be in a movie that actually uses his incredible gifts as a singer and actor.

The $2 million indie movie, directed by Richard LaGravanese, is an adaptation of the cult-classic musical that tells the story of a failed relationship and marriage which spans the length of five years. It begins with Cathy at the end of their marriage and moving backwards, Jamie at the beginning of their relationship and moving forward, and the couple meets in the middle. The Last Five Years originally opened in Chicago in 2001 and off-Broadway in 2002 with Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott as Jamie and Cathy.

The Last Five Years is also making a return to stage with a limited engagement off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre starring Betsy Wolfe (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Merrily We Roll Along) as Cathy and Adam Kantor (Avenue Q, RENT) as Jamie. Previews begin March 7.

Filming for The Last Five Years begins later this year.

What do you think about Jeremy Jordan joining the cast? Do you think Jeremy and Anna can live up to Norbert and Sherie? Let us know in the comments!
