Melody Monday: No ‘Guessing Games’ required for Hunter Parrish’s EP to be a sure bet

Hunter Parrish.

Hunter Parrish.

After spending eight years playing Silas Botwin in the original Showtime series Weeds, Hunter Parrish has been part of a variety of films and TV shows, and has made an effort to stay a part of the musical world. In 2008 he joined the cast of Spring Awakening in New York City, playing Melchior, and in 2011 he portrayed Jesus in the Broadway revival of Godspell at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

In addition to the work he has done on screen and in the two musicals, it is with the relatively recent release of some original songs that the intensity of his unquestionable talent and passion shows through. In June of 2012 Hunter released his first EP, entitled Guessing Games, which was comprised of six songs.

The songs, to which he has said he wanted to give a “rock-acoustic-chill-coffeehouse” theme, are upbeat and effortlessly mix a pop-rock tone with a light-hearted, relaxed feel. The album shines a spotlight on Hunter’s talent, which is perfectly suited for the medium.

With songs that include: “Oh Mother,” a surprisingly cheerful goodbye song, “Guessing Games,” a happy, fun tune suitable for dancing around to and “Heart of Stone,” a slower, heartfelt tune – this album is a refreshing start to anyone’s day.

The first song on the EP, “Oh Mother” does not disappoint. In the song, Hunter paints a picture of a son saying goodbye to his mother as he leaves home, reassuring her that he’ll be alright. As far as song concepts go, this seems like something that would have a slower tempo, but here this is not the case. Instead, it is happy and reassuring, and at times you can hear the smile in his voice.

The debut single which marked the start of his solo career, “Sitting at Home” is a beautiful story of being in love, and the overpowering, exhilarating feeling it gives a person. Accompanying the song was the release of its own music video, where Hunter serenades a girl, beautifully describing how, “it’s like we’re drinking in Paris, it’s like we’re kissing in Rome, it’s all the places you take me when we’re just here sitting at home.”

Mondays are hard, but Hunter’s voice is a surefire way to quickly improve a dull morning – you may even find yourself singing along as you get ready!
