Puppy Love!: Nine Broadway canines worth barking about

It’s that time of year again! The 15th annual Broadway Barks event will take place in Shubert Alley this afternoon.

Founded by Bernadette Peters, the cause is a simple and important one: pet adoption. The event will be benefitting animal shelters and adoption agencies in New York City, and it has been produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Stage Door Dish will be cooking up some live coverage of Broadway Barks (which will include a generous amount of star-studded participants) but, for now, enjoy this list we’ve compiled of our favorite Broadway dogs (in no particular order – they’re all too adorable!)

Laura Osnes and Lyla

Laura Osnes – Lyla

This gorgeous Chihuahua mix is receiving the royal treatment! Lyla has gotten attention thanks to her wonderful owner’s shout-outs in interviews and on social media. This loveable pup has even been backstage at Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella! Laura teased about a Legally Blonde revival starring herself and Lyla as Elle and Bruiser Woods in an interview with broadway.com…but could that actually happen?

Gavin Creel and Wally

Gavin Creel and Wally

Gavin Creel – Wally

Currently residing in London, “Sir” Wally is definitely a dog you’d want to meet! Frequently appearing in Gavin’s Vines, Wally recently gave a cheerful bark in regards to DOMA being struck down, and is very much in favor of marriage equality. He also enjoys riding the train and playing in the park, of course. Fun fact: Celia Keenan-Bolger can differentiate between Gavin and Wally’s gas. Cheers to Wally!

Matt Doyle with Jacob and Laila

This may be cheating, but both of Doyle’s dogs deserve the spotlight! These adorable pets are best friends, and according to Matt, since Jacob is older he is constantly trying to take care of Laila! Hopefully they will make an appearance at Broadway Barks this year, and make even more friends together!

Jeremy Jordan, Ashley Spencer and

This Broadway match made in heaven just so happens to have an equally perfect companion! Riley is a Maltipoo who just adores her fabulous (and talented!) parents. Her fans will be able to find some glamorous shots on her owners’ Instagram accounts!

Cameron Adams, Jeremy Woodard and Rudy

Jeremy Woodard and Cameron Adams – Rudy

Another happy, talented couple with an amazing dog! This hoop-shooting pup is nothing but a good time! With this set of Broadway stars as loving owners, Rudy loves to play basketball and is the life of the party when performing his tricks. Jeremy and Cameron are lucky to have him!

Stephanie J. Block and Macacao

Stephanie J. Block and Macaco

Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian ArcelusMacaco

He made his Broadway debut at the tender age of five, and he is about the size of a hand. Macaco may be Broadway’s most well known pooch! He starred alongside his lovely mom in The Mystery of Edwin Drood last season, and has continued to make headlines since! What will his next career move be? Perhaps a newly imagined version of Cats (directed by Diane Paulus)?

Sutton Foster and Linus

Sutton Foster – Linus

This sweet little Shih Tzu is just as wonderful as his owner! Linus, who is extremely obedient and calm, has been a fan favorite for years now. Maybe Sutton should take a lesson from Stephanie and make a return to Broadway with Linus at her side? We’ll have to wait and see!

Will Chase and Henry

Will Chase and Henry

Will Chase – Henry

Appearing in tweets sent by Will and Debra Messing, Henry is one of the most popular puppies around! He clearly loves Will unconditionally, and whether he’s biting someone’s toes or wrestling a teddy bear, there never seems to be a dull moment with Henry!

Lilla Crawford and Sunny

Lilla Crawford and Sunny

Sunny – Sandy in Annie

Since its original Broadway production, Annie has always adopted a shelter dog to play the role of Sandy. The recent revival (currently on Broadway starring Lilla Crawford) was no different. Rescued all the way from Houston, Texas, Sunny was selected for the part in this musical, and is continuing to capture audience’s hearts with each bow-wowing performance!

  1. BIg and we mean BIG fans of the tiny Yorkie named Macaco. We saw this prince among pooches perform in Drood many times and he was always spot on. Love us some Macaco!

PS…..Will Chase’s Henry is adorable and quite the surprise regarding his size!
