Smash star Leslie Odom Jr. recently launched a Kickstarter project to fund his debut solo album.

Odom is well on his way to raising the targeted $30,000 needed to complete the project. Odom projected on Twitter that it will take approximately 500 backers to reach his goal.

The perks offered to backers when they fund the album project include a digital copy of the album before its release, a chance to Skype with him to talk about the album and VIP tickets to his next concert in New York or L.A.

Over the past few days, Odom has also been reaching out to his fans and followers through Twitter and Facebook, sending messages to encourage them to donate. “We just want to get the music to you,” Odom wrote. “I want to inspire you. I want to inspire myself.”

Odom promises that the album won’t have the typical “black male traditional pop vocalist sound.” Rather, it’ll be “lush, full, and emotional,” full of new arrangements of classic songs as well as original songs. And, since Odom has worked on Broadway in the past (starring in Leap of Faith and Rent), listeners can probably expect a few show tunes as well.

However, Odom is also hopeful that he will be able to channel some of the great musicians of yesteryear including Sammy Davis, Jr. and Nat King Cole.

The Kickstarter campaign ends on April 17.
