Stage Door Snapshots: A look inside this year’s Tony Awards ‘Meet the Nominees’ press reception

I was lucky enough to attend the Meet the Nominees event hosted on Wednesday, May 1, just one day after the 2013 Tony nominees were announced. With my camera in tow, I went snap-happy with taking photos of some of my favorite Broadway performers and delighted in sharing in their big day.

Some of my most memorable moments from the morning included interactions with some of my favorite first-time nominees:

Keala Settle, who is nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Hands on a Hardbody, gave me a giant hug after I congratulated her and we both became misty-eyed moments before her photo-op.

Benj Pasek, nominated for Best Original Score for A Christmas Story, whispered in my ear how overwhelmed he was about the nomination after I congratulated him and his writing partner, Justin Paul. (Benj’s exact words were “I’m freaking out!” – He also told me that Andrew Keenan-Bolger helped him with picking out his outfit because “he goes to these kind of things all the time.”)

Will Chase, nominated for Best Featured in a Musical for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Stephanie J. Block, nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, were looking stunning as ever – something I just couldn’t keep myself from expressing to them. (How could you not compliment Stephanie on that knockout dress?!) Their megawatt smiles and the way they clung to each other made me an extremely proud and happy fan.

Santino Fontana, nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in Cinderella, who walked through the press line told me later, after the evening performance of Cinderella, how crazy the experience was and that he recognized me snapping away with my camera. Seeing him in front of dozens of photographers and media members vying for his attention made me think of something I wrote to him in a note after the first preview of Cinderella and made me extremely happy for his success.

And, of course, like any product of my generation, seeing Tom Hanks was an absolute thrill. (Embarrassingly enough, my very first thought when he began to speak was “Oh my God, that’s Woody’s voice!”)

Although these are the moments that I remember most vividly, that isn’t to say every moment wasn’t an experience. I was so happy to represent Stage Door Dish and participate in something so many of my personal inspirations involved with. I’m already looking forward to the next event!
