The Race to the 2013 Tonys: A look at the candidates for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

It’s that time of year again, and the theatre world is abuzz with Tony nominations.  The nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, as always, is a hot contest, and this year’s nominees are in for a close race!

Billy Porter and Stark Sands as Lola and Charlie in "Kinky Boots."

Stark SandsKinky Boots:

As was predicted, Kinky Boots led with thirteen nominations, including two for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. Both Billy Porter, whose drag queen Lola dominates the stage, and Stark Sands, whose performance as the less-flashy Charlie won over audiences. Their roles are nearly polar opposites, but the two were remarkably endearing onstage together; Porter’s effortless charm and Sands’ ability to emanate sincerity as a young and down-on-luck business owner are largely responsible for Kinky Boots’ commercial success.

Bertie Carvel as Mrs. Trunchbull in "Matilda."

Bertie Carvel, Matilda:

Bertie Carvel is a strong contender with his spot-on portrayal of the menacing Miss Trunchbull, Matilda’s primary antagonist. The character is meant to be disliked, and Carvel makes sure that we do. His portrayal of Miss Trunchbull is cruel, frightening and unreasonable – everything a child would fear.

Rob McClure as Charlie Chaplin in "Chaplin."

Rob McClure, Chaplin:

Rob McClure delivers a convincing and likable performance as Charlie Chaplin himself in Chaplin, and it’s easy to see the love and effort he put into the role. He acts, sings and dances, which is standard enough, but he also walks a tightrope, backflips and rollerskates blindfolded – surely that’s a performance to be applauded!

Santino Fontana as Prince Topher in "Cinderella."

Santino FontanaRodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella:

Santino Fontana is dashing and handsome as Prince Topher.   At times, he’s a little bit silly, but endearingly so, and his chemistry with leading lady Laura Osnes is unmatched.

My prediction: I’ve been won over by Santino Fontana’s charm and onstage interactions with Laura Osnes’ Cinderella, but ultimately Billy Porter will win. His charisma and energy as Lola is unrivaled, and the surprisingly touching Kinky Boots is set to haul in quite a few Tonys this season.
