Top 10 Broadway couples to love this Valentine’s Day

Audra McDonald and Will Swenson

Audra (Porgy and Bess) and Will (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) married in October 2012 at their family home in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. The couple met in 2007 while working in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of 110 in the Shade and became engaged in 2011 in Puerto Rico. Both had children from their first marriages. Audra tweeted a quote from Funny Girl on the day of the wedding; “Well that was just the best day ever. #SadieSadieMarriedLady.”  This couple is one of the most supportive and loving that has ever seen. The entire family was witness to Audra’s fifth Tony win for her portrayal of Bess and with tear-soaked eyes, Audra thanked “the man I’m going to marry, Will Swenson, for telling me to do this. I’m so glad I listened to you. I want to thank my wee posse of three.” The couple, still going strong, reminds us that even in the crazy theatre community, there is still true love.

ryan-matt

Ryan Steele and Matt Doyle

This couple continues to make people squeal over their overwhelming cuteness. While they have never appeared opposite each other on-stage, their constant banter over Twitter and use of the hashtag “#mine” in reference to each other on Instagram makes fans giddy with glee. Both Matt (Book of MormonSpring Awakening) and Ryan (MatildaNewsies) cited that the most amazing thing of 2012 was falling in love with each other. This week Out Magazine cited both in the list of the top 100 “eligible bachelors” and Ryan jokingly sent a tweet to his boyfriend asking him out. Matt quickly responded, “I would love to go out with you boyfriend,” and embellished the tweet with a smiley face. The couple’s unyielding support of each other fills fans with butterflies. We are so happy that two of the most handsome men on Broadway stages have found love.

Celia Keenan-Bolger and John Ellison Conlee.

Any mention of her hubby around the eldest Keenan-Bolger sibling is usually met with a squee and a smile. The couple was set up by close friend Sarah Saltzberg (Spelling Bee) who had worked with Celia earlier and was at that moment auditioning John for Don’t Quit Your Night Job. But Celia admits to falling for her now-husband much earlier. She confesses to first having a rather large “show crush” on John since she first saw his performance in The Butter and Egg Man and referred to him, in private, as “my boyfriend from The Butter and Egg Man.” The couple became engaged in California on a ranch, after Celia had already endured much pestering from Broadway bestie Gavin Creel (Book of Mormon, Hair). They married in Vermont in 2011, with a small group of family and friends including Celia’s two star siblings Andrew and Maggie. Celia’s real-life fairytale gives hope to all who have ever been seriously devastated by a show crush.

Jonathan Groff and Zachary Quinto

Zachary Quinto (Angels in America, Star Trek) first confirmed his relationship with Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening) in Out Magazine’s October 2011 issue. “I’m incredibly happy, I’m incredibly lucky,” he told the reporter. Quinto had only come out of the closet a year before, after years of struggling with honesty in himself. The two have spent significant times together in both New York and Los Angeles, even though their schedules often take them away from each other. However, it doesn’t seem like this takes anything away from their relationship and both wear smiles from ear to ear when in each other’s company. (Plus, when they’re apart, it’s always very endearing to see Zach’s tweets about his dogs missing “other dad.”) Maybe long distance relationships can really work.

Debra Messing and Will Chase

Sometimes the heart imitates art. This on-screen couple is a real off-stage couple too. The two met on the set of Smash, where Messing portrays Julia Houston, a Broadway writer, and Chase played Michael Swift, a Broadway actor playing Joe DiMaggio in the Marilyn Monroe musical Bombshell. The first season of the television show took us through the steamy love affair of the two characters, where Swift swept Houston off her feet. Both partners have been married before but claimed to find true happiness in their new-found relationship. While Chase is no longer going to be on Smash, they are both still in New York. Chase is currently starring in The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Studio 54 while Messing is shooting the second season of Smash. The couple spent Messing’s 44th birthday together and she received an Alexander McQueen bag from her beau. Will says that if he could play any revival, he would romance his girlfriend in Guys and Dolls. We have our fingers crossed that we’ll see this happy couple together on stage one day!

Rory O'Malley and Gerold Sc

Gerold Schroeder and Rory O’Malley

Rory (Book of Mormon) and Gerold were the talk of the town when they became the first same-sex couple to appear as the cover models for GAP. The billboard advertisement was the main feature of the Be One campaign that went up in Times Square. While Gerold does not hold any stage credits himself, his face is not shy from the Broadway paparazzi. Rory is one of the founders of the Broadway Impact and often attends events hand-in-hand with Gerold. And after chatting with Gerold at Rory’s final performance of Book of Mormon, it’s very easy how deeply they love and support each other.

Tam Mutu and Sierra Boggess

Sierra Boggess and Tam Mutu

This Broadway princess has found her prince offstage. Sierra Boggess’s (The Little Mermaid) fiancé is Tam Mutu (Phantom of the Opera), a West End actor whom she met when she performed Love Never Dies. The couple most recently performed Les Miserables together where Boggess played Fantine and Mutu played Javert. But their relationship does not mimic the unsympathetic relationship shared by their characters. Mutu admitted that he could not look down at Boggess as they played their one scene together because he couldn’t bear to see her hurting without needing to instinctively help her up. But Sierra loved that, for the time that they played opposite each other, she could “take home her very own Javert.” The couple has to endure significant amounts of time apart because Sierra originally hails from Broadway and Mutu is London based. The couple has yet to set a date for their wedding because they are both constantly working but they said they hope to marry before the end of the year. After the wedding bells, we would love to see them to play opposite together once again.

Laura Osnes and Nathan Johnson

Nathan Johnson and Laura Osnes

Laura Osnes (Cinderella, Bonnie and Clyde) has been stealing the hearts of Broadway audiences for the past six years, but her own heart has been taken by her husband Nathan Johnson. The couple met while understudying the roles of Jasmine and Aladdin in a regional production of Aladdin. Osnes recalls having a huge crush on her now-husband when they were in the production together. She recently told this story as Nathan Johnson made his New York City debut singing “A Whole New World” at Osnes’s Café Carlyle concert. While Johnson is no longer an actor, Osnes says that he is her rock who keeps her grounded as her career soars. She also loves to know that even though she gets to play Cinderella on stage every night now, that she has her own prince at home.

Jeremy Jordan and Ashley Spencer

“Husband and wife, b-tches!” This Broadway couple were married just after Jordan (Bonnie and Clyde, West Side Story) finished his Tony-nominated run in Newsies originating the role of Jack Kelly. However, Ashley Spencer (Rock of Ages) is no stranger to the Broadway scene. She made her screen debut on Grease: You’re the One that I Want where she came in second place to Jordan’s Broadway bestie Laura Osnes. The couple both played in Rock of Ages on Broadway, though at different times, and first met through Facebook talking about what it was like being in the show. While Jordan is now a regular on Smash, and Spencer is currently on a break after finishing Rock of Ages, the couple still finds special times to spend with just each other if only a dinner or quality time with Riley, their cute puppy.

Kara Lindsay and Kevin Massey

This Broadway starlet is about to tie the knot. Kara Lindsay is currently making her Broadway debut in Newsies as Katherine Plumber, but her fiancé Kevin Massey has been with her since they both starred in the Little House on the Prairie at the Paper Mill Playhouse. What was first an onstage romance became something much greater. Massey recently closed the hit Broadway show Memphis as an ensemble member and understudied for the leading role of Huey Calhoun. Even though they aren’t starring opposite each other and Kara isn’t playing a Disney princess on stage, she still feels like Massey is her Prince Charming.

  1. Laura Benanti/Steven Pasquale aka Broadway’s geekiest goobers! I was surprised to find they aren’t on this list, but definitely agree with everyone else mentioned.

  2. I am definitely going to second Jason and Joe! Oh my GOODNESS they are just so sweet! Watching them interact on stage as Enjolras and Grantaire is well enough, but the curtain call and bows were the sweetest thing! Maybe not Broadway right now, but they are still a lovely couple!

  3. Adorable and fun article!! Perfect for Valentine’s Day. (:

Throwing in an honorable mention for Jason Forbach and Joseph Spieldenner from the U.S. Les Mis Tour, who are total sweethearts and the cutest things. And the whole Enjolras and Grantaire dynamic is fabulous. (:
