Top 5 songs from musical theatre that will put a smile on your face

The best Broadway songs are the ones that can be used to enrich a story as well as apply to everyday life. One of the best feelings in the world is sitting in a theatre and listening to what a character has to say about their situation, and then realizing it is almost identical to your own.

History was made recently, and in honor of DOMA being overturned, here is a list of the top five songs to jam out to while celebrating this incredible step forward in our nation. These catchy show tunes can stand alone as masterpieces; some of them create visions of hope and are extremely uplifting, while others will encourage and motivate its listeners to make a difference. Take a listen to these wonderful songs, all from terrific musicals.

5. “God Don’t Make No Trash” from Bare: A Pop Opera

Listen to Sister Chantelle tell it like it is! In a musical that engrosses its viewers in the twisted romance of two Catholic boys, Sister Chantelle emerges in a dream-like sequence to let Peter know he is on the right track and has nothing to be ashamed of, despite what his church may preach. Although other selections from Bare‘s score can provoke deep thoughts and endless tears, this tune is just plain fun and ultimately empowering!

4. “Let the Sun Shine In”¬†from Hair

Shout-out to Broadway Impact’s co-founder Gavin Creel! This anthem of awareness and change has been a go-to jam for anyone protesting peace as the characters in this musical did. In this video, the 2009 revival cast tackles the tune with power in their voices, capturing a genuinely youthful spirit. This amazing ensemble will never cease to inspire through this cast album, even long after this production has closed!

3. “Do You Hear the People Sing?” from Les Miserables

This one is self-explanatory! Fill the streets with your comrades while blasting this classic from your speakers to join in the festivities! “When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums, there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes” may be one of the most inspiring lyrics of all time, and during our country’s fight for equality, this song is definitely fitting.

2. “Raise You Up/Just Be” from Kinky Boots

“You change the world when you change your mind!” (Wouldn’t that be an awesome tattoo?…or I guess you could just listen to the song. Either one.) This musical’s main ingredient is love along with a dash of compassion, some fabulous flair, and a sprinkle of self-acceptance. The number that closes the show sums up its most important message like a big kinky bow on the top of a revolutionary show. With just a touch of the “play” button, you’ll be dancing in your seat and above all, completely uplifted, just as the title promises.

1. “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles

Every note and rhyme of this song adds up to an incredible message: to be who you are, and to be proud of it. In this flawless performance by David Engel, his sentiment is loud and clear. Even though this show’s revival closed a few years ago, its score is still alive and well.
