Where are they now?: Legally Blonde – The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods

The ridiculously long title of this show alone may bring back a flood of pink-tinted memories. Legally Blonde – The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods. It rolls right off the tongue!

For those who may not know about this gem, a group of talented ladies duked it out on reality television in 2008 in hopes of landing the role of Elle Woods on Broadway when it was announced that Laura Bell Bundy would be leaving the production. Sounds like a typical callback, right? Wrong! Millions of people were watching at home on their televisions in anticipation of who would take on this starring role on Broadway, and thus began the popular reality series. The conflicts ensued, the competition grew fierce, and the high belting (and even higher kicks) were broadcast on MTV every Monday for eight weeks.

The actresses in the running for this role of a lifetime faced a panel of judges (which included Bernie Telsey) and guest stars such as Andy Karl, Orfeh, and Kate Shindle would offer their own guidance as well. Week after week, contestants were eliminated and the challenges became tougher. Whether these women had to perform tricks with the chihuahuas they would be sharing the stage with, dance in pink high-heeled boots on the streets on New York, or learn an entire number of Broadway choreography in one day, these triple threats were always up for the challenge.

Without an ounce of shame, I admit I was addicted to this show. What’s not to love; a glimpse into the world of Broadway casting and exciting performances week after week? Although sometimes the girl drama was a bit excessive, this show used to be my absolute favorite.

After Bailey Hanks ultimately won the competition, I would often wonder- where are the rest of the contestants now? All of these women were so utterly talented and versatile (Telsey was not joking around when he picked them!) and many of them went on to have terrific careers in the industry despite not being crowned as the next Elle Woods. In fact, you may read some of the names below and say to yourself, “She was in this show?”

Lena Hall

What has she been up to?: Perhaps the most recognizable name on this list, Lena Hall (formerly known as Celina Carvajal) was known as the “rocker” during the search for Elle. Since appearing in Broadway productions of Cats, 42nd Street, Tarzan, and Dracula prior to the reality competition, she has since made a name for herself as a rock vocalist and is currently starring in Kinky Boots on Broadway opposite past Legally Blonde stars Annaleigh Ashford and Paul Canaan! Known in many realms of the industry, it’s safe to say that even though she didn’t land the role of Elle Woods, she’s been doing just fine!

Cassie Silva

What has she been up to?: This bubbly, energetic young lady has been tearing it up in Rock of Ages since her days as an honorary blonde! After covering quite a few swing and understudy tracks, she has gone on for the lead role of Sherrie many times now, and has surely been giving some star quality performances every time. She recently performed with the company in Broadway in Bryant Park and at Broadway Sessions. Make sure to catch her at the Helen Hayes soon!

Lauren Zakrin

What has she been up to?: After being told that she was too young at the time to take on this role on Broadway, Lauren was eventually able to take on Elle Woods down the road in the first national Broadway tour and at the MUNY in St. Louis! Lauren also toured with the companies of Wicked and Grease, portraying Glinda and Sandy respectively. Lauren last appeared in the off-Broadway cast of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Personally, Lauren was my favorite actress in this show, and I was hoping for her to take home the top reward. With a voice like hers, I’m sure even more exciting things are on her way!

Rachel Potter

What has she been up to?: This wonderful woman didn’t make it into the top 10 of the television show, but since appearing in two Broadway musicals, a national tour, and living it up with a successful career in country music, that was only the beginning for her! Rachel most recently starred in Evita as The Mistress, single-handedly stealing the show each night during the revival’s run in the Marquis with her heart-breaking rendition of “Another Suitcase in Another Hall.” She also replaced Krysta Rodriguez in The Addams Family, and appeared in the second national tour of Wicked in an ensemble track and then as Glinda later on. Her country EP “Live the Dream” was a smash hit after its release in May 2012, and her original song “The Verdict” was nominated for an Independent Music Award in the category of “Best Country Song.” You go girl!

Autumn Hurlbert

What has she been up to?: After being named as the runner-up in The Search for Elle Woods, Autumn has kept pretty busy to say the least! After appearing on Broadway in Legally Blonde as a vital member of the ensemble, she went on to perform in On the Town at Encores! and Tomorrow Morning. Autumn can also be found in Sudden Death! and was last seen alongside Rory O’Malley and Leslie Kritzer in Nobody Loves You, the quirky and original musical comedy that brought down the house nightly at Second Stage Theatre.

Who says Legally Blondes have more fun? Cheers to Lena, Cassie, Lauren, Rachel, and Autumn!
