Will the results of the 2013 Drama League Awards predict the Tonys?

It’s the season of the Triple Crown! And by that, I mean the Drama League Awards, Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards. The competitors have taken off, and the first race has been completed!

But enough with the horse racing metaphors.

The big winners of the 2013 Drama League Awards were Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for Distinguished Production of a Play, Kinky Boots for Distinguished Production of a Musical, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for Distinguished Revival of a Play, Pippin for Distinguished Revival of a Musical and Nathan Lane for the Distinguished Performance Award. Bernadette Peters and Jerry Mitchell were honored as well.

While these results are not too surprising, it was a feat for Lane to beat out the 59 other nominees he was up against. His competitors included Alan Cumming, Tom Hanks, Rob McClure and Bertie Carvel. Also let’s not forget this award ceremony honored off-Broadway productions and actors as well.

Lane is one of the best performers of our time, and his return to Broadway in The Nance has brought in nothing but rave reviews. He is completely worthy of this honor, though my prediction was that the award would go to Tom Hanks. These men are competing against each other in the category of Best Actor in a Play at the Tony Awards as well, and in this tight race, it’s difficult to say who will be victorious on June 9.

The wins by Pippin, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were no surprise. I am sure history will repeat itself at the Tony Awards, although Golden Boy may prove to be a close contender against our girl Virginia Woolf.

While I am happy for Kinky Boots and that stellar cast, I had anticipated a win from Matilda. It seems that there’s no telling who will take home the top prize, although it’s safe to say with just one Tony nod more, Kinky Boots may be in the lead at the moment.
